Morgan Silver Dollar Values
The Morgan dollar is a silver United States dollar coin minted from 1878 to 1904 and again for one more year in 1921. The Morgan Dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan. It has a fineness of .900, giving a total silver content of 0.77344 troy ounces (24.057 grams) per coin.
The Morgan Silver dollar value is determined largely by two factors. Firstly its grade with un-circulated Morgan dollar coins being the most valued. The lowest grade of un-circulated coins is MS-60. A grade of anything above MS67 is very rare.
Secondly the value of old coins is highly dependent on the rarity of the coin. Morgan coin proofs minted in 1895 fetch the highest price even in a relatively low grade because they are so rare. Only 12,880 of these coins were minted. Also Coins minted in Carson City hold more value because of their usually low mintages. They command premiums even in lower grades. Look for a "CC" on the reverse, underneath the eagle.
Mintmarks appear underneath the tail feathers of the bald eagle on the reverse between the letters D and O in Dollar. Mintmarks include:
* P (Philadelphia Mint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
* CC (Carson City Mint in Carson City, Nevada)
* D (Denver Mint in Denver, Colorado)
* O (New Orleans Mint in New Orleans, Louisiana)
* S (San Francisco Mint in San Francisco, California)
Why Invest and Collect Morgan Dollar Coins
Morgan dollars have been a consistently strong performer compared to other rare coins. The value of a Morgan silver dollar has increased significantly in just the last few years with some Morgan silver dollars increasing by thousands of dollars depending on their grade. Not only do their have numismatic and historic value, they make a great investment in this troubled economic time.
The Morgan Dollar is one of the most popular, researched and documented US coins of all time which is why there are plenty of certified (professionally graded) Morgan silver dollar coins for sale. This is important if you are buying Morgan coins on online auctions such as eBay as even the smallest increments in the grade of a Morgan coin can produce significant differences in value. For example a 1893-S Morgan coin for sale graded at MS 64 would be 120,000 dollars more then the same coin for sale graded at MS 63. A grade of MS67 is the highest grade that you will see on a Morgan. Anything higher is possible, but extremely unlikely. (MS stands for Mint State)
Another reason to collect Morgan Silver dollar coins is that they are strongly tied to the price of silver bullion and they are not so expensive to buy unlike gold coins. Also according to moneyweak.com silver is the investment opportunity of a life time with the value of silver set to soar
Which Morgan Dollars Should I Invest in?
If you are considering investing in Morgan dollars the most important question you could ask is which Morgan Dollars have had the strongest growth over the last few years. Morgan silver dollars that have seen the strongest gains in the last decade are the coins most likely to produce similar results in the long term future. Also my advice would be to consider purchasing the more valuable Morgan dollars for two reasons. Firstly the mark up and shipping is proportionately less to their value and secondly they make a better investmant. A coin worth $100 that increases to $150 dollars isn't so exciting as a $10,000 coin that increases to $15,000.
If you are going to buy Morgan silver coins you should know their value and their appreciation in value over time which is why I have provided the following price guide based upon data from the Red Book Guide on U.S. Morgan Dollars. The links below provide the value of Morgan dollars in 2000 and again in 2009 for each coin and grade. This gives the coin value increase between these two years or the effective annual return rate. Morgan silver dollars that have seen the strongest gains in the last decade are the coins most likely to produce similar results in the long term future and are good coins to invest in.
